Overview
Imagine living in a world where the simple acts of daily life made things better for everyone. Where you didn't have to worry that you were harming the planet because you decided to drive to work today. Where cars were non-polluting and even more reliable than they are now. Where spacious housing, made from environmentally friendly materials, was energy efficient and able to shrug off the worst of nature's fury, while still being affordable for the majority of people. And not just here in America, but in the rest of the world as well Where a better future was not something that people dreamed of, but knew was a certainty.
Now imagine if you only had a split second to choose between that world and the world we now live in with it's ever growing worries about pollution, disease, war, and famine. That, believe it or not, is exactly where we are today. We have a moment in which we can lock in a better future for everyone, or we can continue down the same path we are traveling now.
We all know that the planet's in danger. Global warming, pollution, poverty, terrorism, over-population are all cited as threats to our continued survival. Every day news about how much worse things are getting seems to surface, making us feel that something must be done, and done soon, but what?
Meanwhile, politician and industry leaders drag their feet about what to do to solve the problems. They make claims about the economic costs being too high or the necessary technologies being too far off. Other folks preach that we need to make radical changes to our lifestyle if we want to survive.
There is hope
In reality, there are solutions to almost all of these problems today. These solutions don't require advances in technology, or for people to make dramatic changes in their lives. They do, however, require people to think differently in how things are made. For years now, organizations like the Buckminster Fuller Institute and others have worked hard at educating people as to how these changes can be made. It is now time to start showing them.
Our goal at Promethean Fires Foundation is to build pilot projects to show people all over the world, not merely that we should use less in our daily lives, but that we can live better than we do now, while using less. Nobody at PFF is going to ask you to give up your iPod in hopes that it will save the planet. We like our iPods and think that everyone who wants one should be able to buy one.
To accelerate the adoption of the technologies we wish to promote, we'll take out no patents, trademarks, or other intellectual property restrictions on our work. All publications will be available for free in electronic form, or for a modest price in printed form.
In addition to promoting those technologies which exist now, we intend to pursue long term, high risk, high yield projects to help ensure the long term survival of the species. We hope that you'll come to embrace this vision of the future as much as we have.
Your donation, membership, or other support, is what we need to make this happen. We can all have a better future with your help.
What sets us apart
Of course, you're probably asking yourself why you should donate to us, when there are so many other organizations asking for your help. Certainly, in times of disaster give your support to the Red Cross, Salvation Army, or similar organizations. They can put the money to work immediately, but after the crisis is over, those organizations will have moved onto someplace else, while many of the problems which led to the disaster still remain.
Simply donating to the Red Cross only helps in the short term. The Red Cross mission is not to undertake programs which will slow global warming, lower the cost of housing, give indigent people the tools to help themselves raise their standard of living, while protecting the environment. Ours is.
